The River Project
For years, the river that crosses Millford was treated as a convenient place to forget rubbish. After heavy rain, plastic containers and branches collected near the bridge, while the water became too dirty for many birds and fish. A group of residents decided that waiting for someone else to solve the problem was no longer acceptable. They formed a volunteer project with two aims: to remove waste and to understand where it came from. During the first clean-up, they filled dozens of bags, but they also recorded the types of rubbish they found. Most items came from overflowing bins near the market or had been carried downstream from nearby villages. The group presented its results to the council, which agreed to install covered containers and add signs beside the river. Local schools then joined monthly clean-ups and tested the water with a science teacher. The river has not become perfect overnight, yet the change is visible. More wildlife has returned, and residents now see the river as a shared responsibility rather than somebody else’s problem. The volunteers continue to meet on the first Saturday of each month. They report damaged containers quickly, and the council is considering a cycling path that would bring more visitors without disturbing the riverbank. The project has also encouraged neighbouring villages to examine their own waste systems.
