Past Perfect Continuous
- Duración hasta un punto pasado: She had been studying for three hours when the library closed.
- Causa de una situación o un resultado pasado: The ground was wet because it had been raining.
- Actividad repetida o temporal anterior a otro hecho: They had been meeting every week before the project ended.
- Afirmativa: They had been waiting for an hour.
- Negativa: They had not been waiting for long. La contracción habitual es hadn't been.
- Interrogativa: Had they been waiting for long? En preguntas con how long, se dice How long had they been waiting?
El past perfect continuous destaca el proceso o su duración: She had been writing for two hours before lunch.
By eight, she had been working for three hours.
- Los verbos de estado como know, believe, own o need no suelen usarse en continuo. Se dice They had known each other for years, no had been knowing.
Errores frecuentes
- Omitir been: I had working all day ❌ → I had been working all day ✅.
- Usar el participio en lugar de -ing: She had been worked ❌ → She had been working ✅.
- Cambiar had por persona: He has been waiting before I arrived ❌ → He had been waiting before I arrived ✅.
- Usarlo con un verbo de estado: We had been owning the house for years ❌ → We had owned the house for years ✅.
