Present Continuous
Cuándo se usa
El present continuous cuenta lo que está pasando ahora mismo o lo que es temporal:
- Acciones en curso: She is reading in the garden.
- Situaciones temporales: I am working from home this week.
- Planes ya cerrados con fecha: We are flying to Rome on Friday.
- Cambios en marcha: The city is growing very fast.
Cómo se forma
am / is / are + verbo en -ing: I am, he / she / it is, you / we / they are.
Reglas de la -ing:
- Verbo acabado en -e muda: se cae la -e (make → making, write → writing).
- Una sílaba acabada en vocal + consonante: se dobla la consonante (run → running, sit → sitting).
- Verbo acabado en -ie: pasa a -ying (lie → lying, die → dying).
La negativa añade not detrás del verbo be (isn't working) y la interrogativa pone be delante del sujeto (Are you working?): el auxiliar do no aparece nunca.
Verbos que no admiten continuo
Los verbos de estado describen algo que no se hace, se tiene: know, want, like, need, believe, belong, understand. Van en present simple aunque hablemos de ahora:
- I am wanting a coffee ❌ → I want a coffee ✅.
- She is knowing the answer ❌ → She knows the answer ✅.
Present simple o present continuous
- Rutina o hecho general: present simple. I take the bus every morning.
- Ahora mismo o algo temporal: present continuous. I am taking the bus right now.
Los marcadores lo cantan: always, every day, on Mondays piden present simple; now, at the moment, today, this week piden present continuous.
Errores frecuentes
- Olvidar el verbo be: She working now ❌ → She is working now ✅.
- Meter el auxiliar do: Do you working? ❌ → Are you working? ✅.
- Usar continuo con verbos de estado: I am liking this song ❌ → I like this song ✅.
- No doblar la consonante: runing ❌ → running ✅.

We are not meeting the clients tomorrow after all.

The children are not playing outside at the moment.
